Escobaria dasyacantha (Engelmann) Britton & Rose 1923
COB CACTUS, DENSE CORY-CACTUS
Plants solitary to occasionally clustering.
Stems depressed globose to short cylindrical, to 20 cm (7.9 in) high, 4-7 cm (1.6-2.8 in) in diameter, covered by dense, white spines.
Tubercles to 10 mm (0.4 in) long, older ones often corky basally and losing spines.
Central spines 7-17, stout, white, 25 mm (1 in) long.
Radial spines 25-50 or more, stout, white, 6-25 mm (0.2-1 in) long.
Flowers pinkish to brownish, occasionally greenish, to 2 cm (0.8 in) long, 1.5-2 cm (0.6-0.8 in) in diameter, rarely opening fully because of stiff, dense spines.
Fruits club shaped, red, to 1 cm (0.4 in) long.
Distribution: southern New Mexico and west Texas, and Chihuahua, Coa-huila, and Zacatecas, Mexico.
Two subspecies of Escobaria dasyacantha are recognized.
Subspecies chaffeyi is like subspecies dasyacantha except the spines are not as stout and the flowers are as long as 1.5 cm (0.6 in) and pink, brownish, or occasionally green; it occurs only in Zacatecas.

Kugelig bis kurz-oblong, meist 4-7 cm durchmesser und zuweilen bis 20 cm lang;
Randstacheln 20 oder mehr, weiß, borstig;
Mittelstacheln ungefahr 9, kräftiger und länger als die randständigen, die obere Hälfte meist rötlich oder bräunlich, oft bis 2 cm lang;
Blute rosa;
Perigonblatter schmal-oblong, gewimpert (äußere);
Narben grün;
Frucht keulig, Scharlach, 1,5-2cm lang;
Samen schwarz, l mm durchmesser, schwach abgeflacht, punktiert, mit schmalem, weißem, subbasalem Hilum.
USA (W-Texas, S-Neumexiko), N-Mexiko (Chihuahua).
