Plants solitary, flattened globose, bright green, depressed and unarmed apically, to 15 cm (5.9 in) in diameter.
Ribs about 20, irregular and oblique, forming distinct tubercles.
Central spines 2-3, somewhat curved.
Radial spines 8-12, slender, slightly curved, 6-12 mm (0.2-0.5 in) long.
Flowers borne at the stem tips, open during the day, scarlet, to 4 cm (1.6 in) in diameter.
Distribution: Andes of Bolivia.
Several infraspecific taxa have been described, none recognized here because much additional research is necessary.
